International Youth Day 2026: Different Contexts, Common Aspirations
The African Youth Water Forum (AYWF) is pleased to commemorate International Youth Day 2026 under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” with a dedicated virtual dialogue on “Youth Leading Water Governance Across Africa.” International Youth Day provides an important opportunity to recognize the contributions, aspirations, and leadership of young people in shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future. Across Africa, young people live in different social, economic, environmental, and political contexts, yet share common aspirations for a better future — including equitable access to safe water, healthy communities, a protected environment, meaningful participation, and opportunities to influence decisions that affect their lives.
Youth and Water Governance
- Water is central to Africa’s development, but the continent continues to face significant challenges related to water access, governance, climate change, pollution, infrastructure, and growing demand for water resources.
- Young people are not only among those affected by these challenges; they are also innovators, advocates, researchers, community leaders, entrepreneurs, and policy actors who can contribute to practical solutions.
- The dialogue will create a platform for young people from different African contexts to come together, share experiences, exchange ideas, and explore how youth can take a more meaningful role in water governance and decision-making across the continent.

Our common aspirations
- While African youth may come from different countries, cultures, communities, and circumstances, our aspirations are connected. We aspire to live in an Africa where water resources are sustainably managed, equitably distributed, protected from pollution, and resilient to climate change.
- We also aspire to an Africa where young people are not merely invited to participate in water discussions, but are trusted, empowered, and given meaningful opportunities to lead.
- AYWF believes that youth participation must move beyond consultation to meaningful engagement, leadership, co-creation, and decision-making.
